About the Hijri Calendar

The Hijri calendar (Arabic: التقويم الهجري‎) is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used by Muslims worldwide to determine the proper days for Islamic holidays and rituals, such as the annual fasting during Ramadan and the Hajj pilgrimage.

The calendar is based on the Hijra (هِجْرَة) or migration of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which marks the start of the Islamic era. The current Islamic year is 1445 AH (Anno Hegirae or "in the year of the Hijra").

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which is a solar calendar with months having fixed numbers of days, the Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar. Its months begin when the new crescent moon is visible. As a result, the Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, causing Islamic holidays to occur on different Gregorian dates each year, cycling through the seasons over a 33-year period.
